The Goldfish and the Gentle Zombie

In the middle of Professor Peabody's dusty shop sat a glass pyramid filled with shimmering water. Inside swam Barnaby, a tiny goldfish with scales like sunshine.

Barnaby wasn't ordinary. Every night at midnight, he could leave his pyramid and swim through air like water. One magical evening, he floated out the shop window and into the moonlit graveyard.

There he met Zed, a little zombie with green skin and patchwork overalls. Zed was crying.

"What's wrong?" Barnaby asked, splashing through the starlight.

Zed sniffled. "Everyone runs away from me. They call me scary. But I just want a friend."

Barnaby swam closer. "You don't seem scary. You seem lonely."

Zed's face lit up like a lantern. "Will you be my friend?"

"Yes!" said Barnaby. "And I know what will cheer you up."

Together they climbed the grassy hill behind the graveyard, where a single orange tree grew. Zed reached up with his careful, patched-up hands and plucked the brightest orange he could find. Its skin glowed like a tiny sun.

"What do we do with it?" Zed asked.

Barnaby smiled. "We share it. Friends always share."

So under the light of the silver moon, the goldfish and the zombie sat together on the soft grass, eating sweet orange sections and talking about stars and dreams.

"I never knew making a friend could taste so sweet," Zed said, juice dripping down his green chin.

"The best things are always better together," Barnaby replied.

And every night after that, Barnaby would swim out of his glass pyramid to visit Zed. The other zombies weren't scary at all—they were just lonely. Soon, the whole zombie family was sharing oranges and stories with the bravest little goldfish in the world.

Professor Peabody never did figure out why his goldfish looked so happy each morning. But magic, he learned, doesn't always need an explanation. Sometimes it just needs a friend.
