The Goldfish and the Gentle Sphinx

Lily's goldfish Finley wasn't ordinary. Every night at midnight, he swam to the surface of his bowl and whispered magical stories. One evening, Finley bobbed his orange-scaled head and said, "Lily, my friend, the Sphinx needs our help!"

Lily rubbed her eyes. "The Sphinx? But she's only in storybooks!"

"Not this one," Finley bubbled. "She guards the Garden of Wishes, but something terrible has happened. Her magical orange amulet has been stolen!"

Before Lily could ask more, Finley leaped from his bowl and transformed into a tiny golden fish with fluttery wings. Together they soared out the window, following a glowing orange path through the starry sky.

In a mysterious garden, they found the Sphinx — but she wasn't moving at all. Her golden fur was matted, her wings drooped, and her wise eyes were closed tight. She looked almost like a zombie, but not a scary one. Just very, very sleepy.

"The amulet keeps her awake," Finley explained. "Without it, she falls into an enchanted sleep."

They spotted the thief: a lonely little dragon curled around the orange amulet, using its glow like a nightlight.

"He's not mean," Lily whispered. "He's just afraid of the dark."

Lily approached gently. The dragon trembled but didn't run away. "We can help you," she promised. "But the Sphinx needs her amulet to protect the garden."

The dragon's eyes widened. "You'd help a scared dragon like me?"

"Of course!" said Finley. "That's what friends do."

Lily had an idea. She took a small orange from her pocket — she'd brought it for a snack — and placed it beside the dragon. "This can be your nightlight. And we'll visit you every night so you're never alone."

The dragon returned the amulet. As the Sphinx's eyes opened, sparkling like morning dew, she smiled. "You two have solved a puzzle wiser than any riddle. Kindness is the greatest magic of all."

From that night on, Lily, Finley, and their new dragon friend had wonderful adventures together. And every evening, they left a little orange by the dragon's cave — a glowing reminder that friendship shines brightest when we share our light.
