The Goldfish and the Crystal Pyramid
Maya's room was quiet except for the gentle bubbling of her small aquarium. Inside swam Barnaby, an orange goldfish with shimmering scales that caught the afternoon sun. Every day after school, Maya would press her nose against the glass and tell Barnaby everything — her tests, her dreams, her secrets.
One Tuesday, something extraordinary happened. Maya was building a pyramid out of wooden blocks when she accidentally knocked it over. The blocks tumbled against the aquarium, and suddenly, the water began to glow with golden light.
Barnaby swam to the surface and — Maya couldn't believe her eyes — spoke in a tiny, bubbling voice. "Maya, the Crystal Pyramid needs us!"
Before she could ask how, the room dissolved around her. Maya found herself standing on a sparkling sea floor, still able to breathe. Barnaby, now the size of a dolphin, swam beside her.
"The Crystal Pyramid protects all ocean creatures," Barnaby explained. "But its magic is fading because no one has visited it in a hundred years. Will you help me restore it?"
Maya nodded eagerly. Together they swam through coral forests and past schools of rainbow-colored fish. At last, they reached it — a magnificent pyramid made entirely of crystal, pulsing with soft blue light.
Inside, Maya placed her hands on the central crystal. She closed her eyes and thought about all the stories she had shared with Barnaby, all the afternoons they had spent together.
The pyramid burst into brilliant light. "Friendship," it resonated, "is the strongest magic of all."
In a blink, Maya was back in her room. Everything looked ordinary, except for one thing — a tiny crystal pyramid now sat beside her fishbowl.
Barnaby swam to the glass and blew bubbles that formed the word "FRIEND."
Maya smiled, pressing her palm against the glass. Some friendships, she realized, are magical in ways you never expect.
