The Golden Splash
Tommy's room was ordinary—except for Finley, his pet goldfish. Finley wasn't ordinary at all. While most goldfish just swam in circles, Finley could make wishes come true. Tommy discovered this magic one rainy afternoon when he wished for something exciting to happen, and suddenly Finley's bowl began to glow with shimmering golden light.
The next day, Tommy had the worst baseball game of his life. He struck out every time he stepped up to the plate. His shoulders slumped as he walked home, feeling like the worst player in the whole league.
'What's wrong, Tommy?' a tiny voice squeaked.
Tommy spun around. His room was empty—except for Finley, whose fins were wiggling excitedly.
'Finley? Can you talk?'
'Only when you really need me to,' Finley said, swimming to the front of his bowl. 'I saw your game. You need something special.' The goldfish did a flip, and a glowing orange pill appeared on the carpet. 'This is a magic baseball vitamin. One bite before your next game, and you'll hit homeruns every time!'
Tommy stared at the vitamin. It sparkled like a tiny star. But then he thought about his teammates—how they practiced so hard, how some of them never got hits but still smiled and cheered for each other.
'Finley, what if the vitamin makes me win, but I didn't earn it?' Tommy asked. 'Is that fair?'
Finley did three surprised flips. 'You're wiser than most humans, Tommy. The real magic isn't in the vitamin. It's in believing you can do hard things.' The vitamin vanished in a puff of sparkles.
The next game, Tommy stepped up to the plate. No magic vitamin, just his own determination. He focused, swung with everything he had, and—CRACK! The ball sailed over the fence. His teammates rushed him, cheering wildly.
That night, Finley's bowl glowed brighter than ever. Some magic comes from vitamins and wishes, Tommy learned, but the best magic comes from believing in yourself.
