The Golden Lightning Game
Max loved baseball more than anything. Every day after school, he would grab his glove and run to the park where his friends waited. But today was different.
Dark clouds gathered overhead as Max stepped up to bat. CRACK! The ball soared into the sky—higher and higher until it disappeared into a storm cloud that flashed with lightning.
"I'll get it!" Max called, running toward the woods where the ball had fallen.
But when he reached the edge of the forest, something magical happened. The lightning had struck the ground, creating a shimmering pool that glowed like liquid gold.
Peering into the water, Max saw something extraordinary. A tiny goldfish with scales that sparkled like stars swam to the surface.
"Hello, Max," the goldfish said. "I've been waiting for you."
Max's eyes widened. "You can talk?"
"Lightning magic!" the fish explained. "Once every hundred years, lightning strikes create golden pools where fish can speak for one hour. My name is Finn, and I need your help."
"What kind of help?"
Finn swam excitedly. "The Storm Giants are playing baseball against the Sun Spirits, but they're missing their best player! A small, brave creature who isn't afraid of running fast even when the ground shakes. Will you play?"
Max's heart raced. A magical baseball game with Storm Giants? But then he thought about how sometimes he was afraid to run fast during regular games, scared he might trip or miss the ball.
"I'm not that brave," Max said quietly.
"Bravery isn't about not being afraid," Finn said wisely. "It's about doing what matters even when you ARE afraid."
Max took a deep breath. "Okay. I'll do it."
Suddenly, Max was standing on a cloud baseball diamond. Storm Giants rumbled like thunder while Sun Spirits glowed like sunshine. The game began!
When it was Max's turn to bat, the ground shook. He closed his eyes for a moment, thought of Finn's words, and opened them again. He swung with all his might—
CRACK!
Running toward first base, Max didn't worry about tripping. He just ran. And he was safe!
The Sun Spirits cheered so loudly that they almost outshone the storm clouds.
After the game, Max found himself back by the golden pool. Finn surfaced one last time.
"You were amazing! The Storm Giants want you to know that courage comes in all sizes."
The pool began to fade. "Thank you, Finn!" Max called.
As the magical water disappeared, Max spotted something shiny in the grass—his baseball, now with a tiny golden scale pressed into it like a coin.
Max walked home, running a little faster than usual, ready for tomorrow's game. He might still be scared sometimes, but now he knew that's exactly when he could be brave.
