The Golden Hour

She checks his iPhone again. Not a full search—just a quick glance while he's in the shower. She's become a spy in her own marriage, tracking patterns like inflection points in a graph. Six missed calls from 'Dental Associates' last Tuesday. Three texts from 'Sarah' at 2 AM on Thursday.

She swallows her vitamin D with tap water from the bathroom sink. The pill sticks in her throat, a bitter knot of something that refuses to dissolve.

'I'm heading out,' he calls from the hallway. 'Cable guy coming between four and six.'

'Again? He was just here last month.'

'Intermittent signal, babe. They're trying to fix it.'

She watches from the window as his sedan disappears down the street. The cable van arrives at 4:15. A different guy than last time—younger, with nervous energy.

'Ma'am, there's nothing wrong with your service,' he says after thirty minutes of checking lines and connections. 'Signal's strong as hell.'

She pours him water from the fridge. He drinks it standing in her kitchen, looking around.

'So why does my husband keep calling you out here?'

He sets the glass down on the counter. Water rings bloom on the granite.

'Look, lady, I'm not supposed to say nothing. But your husband meets someone here. Gives me fifty bucks to say I'm working on the cable.' He glances at his watch. 'Usually only takes about twenty minutes.'

'Someone named Sarah?'

He shrugs. 'Don't know names. Just know a setup when I see one.'

He leaves at five. She spends the next hour packing her vitamins, her books, the things that truly belong to her. When his key turns in the lock at 6:07, she's sitting on the couch with a single glass of water.

'Cable fixed?' he asks, too cheerful.

'Signal's never been better,' she says. 'But I think we lost connection long before today.'

The water glass sits between them on the coffee table, a shimmering lens that distorts both their faces, makes them strangers to each other again.
