The Golden Goldfish's Secret
Leo loved summertime. Every day, he'd grab his favorite baseball and run to the park. But today was different. Today, something magical was about to happen.
Under the tall palm tree that swayed in the warm breeze, Leo spotted something strange. A small goldfish was flopping on the grass, gasping for air. Without thinking, Leo scooped up the fish and rushed to the pond.
"Thank you," said a tiny voice.
Leo jumped. "Who said that?"
"Me! The goldfish!" The fish shimmered and suddenly grew wings. "I'm not just any goldfish. I'm a magical fish! I can grant you one wish for saving me."
Leo couldn't believe his ears. But before he could speak, a gray cat with yellow eyes pounced from behind the palm tree.
"Not so fast!" the cat hissed. "That fish belongs to me!"
The goldfish darted behind Leo's leg. "She's lying! She just wants to eat me!"
Leo looked at the cat's sad eyes. Then he remembered something his mom had told him. "Sometimes, things aren't what they seem. Tell me the truth, cat. Why do you want the fish?"
The cat's ears drooped. "My kittens are sick. The forest healer said we need magic fish scales to make them better. But I don't want to hurt anyone."
Leo's heart melted. He knelt beside the cat. "We don't need to hurt anyone. Goldfish, can you help without being eaten?"
The goldfish swam in circles. "I can give just one tiny scale! It's full of healing vitamins. That should work!"
The cat's eyes widened. "Really? You'd do that?"
"Of course!" said the goldfish. "Friendship is better than fighting."
The goldfish wiggled a tiny, sparkling scale onto the grass. The cat carefully picked it up in her mouth.
"Thank you!" the cat purred. "Come visit my kittens someday!"
"I will!" Leo promised.
As the cat ran home, the goldfish turned to Leo. "What about your wish?"
Leo smiled. "I already got it. I made two new friends today."
The goldfish beamed. "That's the best wish of all."
That evening, Leo told his mom the whole story. She hugged him tight. "You're becoming quite extraordinary, Leo. You chose kindness over wishes."
And from that day on, every time Leo passed that palm tree, he waved at the pond. Sometimes, he'd see a golden fin splash water at him. And sometimes, a gray cat would appear with three tiny kittens, all healthy and happy, ready to play the most magical game of baseball anyone had ever seen.
