The Golden Cable's Secret

In the corner of Emma's backyard, an old above-ground pool sat covered with leaves. No one had swum in it for years—or so Emma thought. One summer evening, while running through the garden catching fireflies, she noticed something strange. The pool was filled not with rainwater, but with swirling silver stars that glowed like tiny moons.

Emma leaned closer, and a beautiful goldfish with scales like sunset clouds floated to the surface. But this was no ordinary goldfish—it had wings like a dragonfly and spoke in a voice like wind chimes.

"We've been waiting for you, Emma," the fish said. "The World-Between is in trouble. A grumpy bull has blocked the magical cable that brings dreams to children."

"Dreams travel through cables?" Emma asked, her eyes wide.

"Not telephone cables—star cables!" The fish sprinkled glowing dust over Emma. "Grab my fin, and we'll swim through the pool to the other side."

Emma held her breath and jumped. The pool wasn't water at all—it was a doorway! She and the flying goldfish tumbled through clouds the color of cotton candy.

In the World-Between, a magnificent bull with a coat of storm clouds stood guard over a thick golden cable that pulsed with light. The bull looked fierce, but Emma noticed tears sparkling in his eyes.

"Why are you blocking the dreams?" she asked gently.

"No one ever visits me," the bull rumbled sadly. "I'm lonely."

Emma thought for a moment. "What if the dream-cable could bring children to visit you? We could have picnics and tell stories!"

The bull's ears perked up. He stepped aside, and the golden cable flared brighter than ever.

That night, children everywhere had wonderful new dreams—of flying fish, star pools, and bulls who just wanted friends. And Emma? She found that sometimes the loneliest creatures just need someone to say hello. Now, whenever she passes her old pool, she sprinkles some goldfish crackers into the water, just in case her friend wants to visit again.
