The Golden Cable Mystery
Lily was digging in her garden when something golden glinted in the dirt. She pulled and pulled until up came a thick golden cable, stretching all the way into the clouds!
"What are you doing?" squeaked a tiny voice. A small creature, no bigger than a kitten, peeked from behind a rosebush. It had the body of a lion, the wings of an eagle, and a human face—a miniature sphinx!
"I found this cable," Lily whispered, not frightened at all. "I wonder where it goes?"
The sphinx fluttered her wings. "It goes to the Pool of Wishes! But first, you must answer my riddle: What has keys but can't open locks?"
Lily thought hard. "A piano!"
"Correct!" The sphinx did a happy spin. "I'm Cleo, and I've been waiting hundreds of years for someone to answer my riddles. Everyone else ran away!"
"Why would they run? You're adorable!" Lily giggled.
Cleo beamed. "Will you visit my pool? I've never shown anyone."
Together they climbed the golden cable like a rope ladder, up past the clouds, into a secret cave lit by glowing crystals. There shimmered a pool filled not with water, but with swirling colors—dancing purple, sparkling blue, shimmering pink.
"Make a wish," said Cleo.
Lily closed her eyes. "I wish for a friend who likes riddles and adventures."
Cleo gasped. "That's me!"
The pool's colors erupted into rainbow fireworks. "Your wish is already granted," Cleo said, her eyes shining. "The magic wasn't in the pool. It was in finding each other."
Every day after school, Lily climbed the golden cable to visit Cleo. They had tea parties with invisible cups, invented new riddles, and sometimes just watched the pool's colors dance, grateful for the most magical discovery of all: true friendship.
