The Golden Baseball Game

Tommy held his favorite baseball glove in one hand and a leash in the other. At the end of the leash bounced Buster, the happiest golden retriever in the whole world. They were going to the park to play catch, just like they did every Saturday afternoon.

But today was different. As they passed Mrs. Higgins' house, Tommy saw her crying on her front porch. Her beautiful pond was empty. "My wonderful goldfish, Sparkle, is gone," she sniffed. "A heron must have swooped down and taken him."

Tommy's heart felt heavy. Sparkle was the most amazing fish — he could do flips and splashes and seemed to smile when anyone came to visit. "Don't worry, Mrs. Higgins! Buster and I will help you find him!"

Buster's tail wagged excitedly as they searched the garden. Suddenly, Buster started barking at the old oak tree. Tommy looked up and gasped. There, sitting on the highest branch, was a magnificent blue heron! And in its beak, holding on tight, was a tiny orange goldfish.

"Sparkle!" Tommy shouted, but the heron looked frightened. It had found the fish in the pond during the night and was keeping it safe in a small puddle in the tree hollow. The bird hadn't wanted to hurt the fish — it just wanted a friend.

Tommy had an idea. He took out his baseball and wrote "HELP" on it in big letters. Then he gently tossed it toward the tree. The heron understood! It carried the baseball down and placed Sparkle safely back in the pond.

"Thank you!" Mrs. Higgins hugged them both. "You and Buster are heroes!" Tommy smiled. Sometimes the best adventures happen when you least expect them — and when you're kind to everyone, even a lonely heron just looking for a friend.
