The Glitter Pyramid Scheme
Maya's hair refused to cooperate. It was day three of the great frizz disaster of sophomore year, and Jordan's party was tonight. THE party. The one everyone would be posting about for weeks.
"Just use more product," her sister had said, but nothing worked. Maya stared at her reflection, phone buzzing incessantly on the counter. Her iPhone lit up with another Snapchat notification — Cassie already had her hair done, obviously perfect, obviously effortless.
The social pyramid at Northwood High wasn't exactly subtle. Cassie and her orbit at the top. Then the people who somehow knew everything. Then everyone else. Then Maya, usually.
Until the pyramid scheme.
It had started as a joke in homeroom. "Glitter Goddesses" — some ridiculous MLM that Harper's cousin's friend was pushing. But Harper, in her infinite wisdom, decided it was actually perfect. "We're not selling the stuff," she'd whispered during third period. "We're BUYING our way into relevance."
Maya had spent her allowance on gold shimmer hair mist. Harper went for body glitter that apparently cost more than her weekly lunch budget. They'd meet after school to coordinate their "rebranding."
"You're glowing," Harper said now, spraying more mist into Maya's stubborn curls. "Trust me. By tonight, everyone's gonna know we're the ones who discovered this stuff first. We'll set the trend. We're basically influencers."
Maya's phone dinged. A text from her crush: "hey, heard you guys found that new glitter stuff"
Her stomach did that thing where it forgot how to exist. Harper raised her eyebrows like she'd planned this entire universe.
"See?" Harper said. "Pyramid scheme? No. Strategic social positioning."
Maya caught her reflection in the mirror. Her hair was still kind of frizzy. But it was also sort of glowing. And for the first time all week, she didn't hate it.
"Whatever," Maya said, grabbing her phone. "Let's go before I change my mind."
They walked into Jordan's party covered in glitter like disco ball refugees. Cassie stared. Harper's crush actually waved. And Maya's phone stayed in her pocket for maybe three whole minutes.
Sometimes the pyramid schemes worked. Especially when you were in on the joke.
