The Glass Pyramid

Mara stared at her iPhone on the corner of her mahogany desk, the screen glowing with another unread message from Him. Three months since the corporate espionage investigation had blown up their department, and still the messages came.

She'd been the one to discover him—her mentor, her lover—selling their company's proprietary algorithms to competitors. The spy in their midst, sleeping beside her every night while copying files onto encrypted drives.

Now she stood in his office, packing box in hand, eyes drawn to the goldfish bowl on his windowsill. Three orange fish swimming in endless circles, trapped in glass so clear you almost couldn't see it. He'd bought them the weekend after their first corporate retreat to Cancun, where they'd stayed in that pyramid-shaped resort and eaten fresh papaya every morning.

'I want a life with you,' he'd whispered then, mango juice on his lips. 'Not this pyramid scheme of a career climbing over people.' She'd believed him. She'd almost quit her own rising trajectory to build something with him.

The fish continued their oblivious circling. She reached to tap the glass, remembering how he'd joke that they had better memories than either of them would need in their line of work. How ironic that fish memory had outlasted their relationship.

Her phone buzzed again. 'I miss you.' The lies never ended.

Mara dropped her house keys into his fish bowl instead. They sank past the swaying orange fish, coming to rest among the colorful pebbles. Let him explain that to whoever cleaned out his office. Let him wonder, just once, what had been real and what had been another performance.

She walked out past the empty receptionist desk, her heels clicking against the polished concrete floor. For the first time in three years, her future felt like her own again—not something to be stolen, not something to be given away. Just hers.
