The Glass Pyramid

Sarah ran past the corporate headquarters at 11:47 PM, her breath steaming in the November cold. The glass pyramid rose against the sky like some ancient monument to ambition, its peak catching the moonlight. She'd spent fourteen years climbing inside that structure - conference rooms, corner offices, the endless vertical hierarchy that promised everything and delivered exhaustion.

Her lungs burned. Good. At least something felt real.

The corporate retreat had been her breaking point. Her division head - the man with the predatory smile her team called 'the fox' - had suggested she find work-life balance while simultaneously assigning her three new accounts. The irony tasted like bile.

Running past the reflective surface, she caught her own shadow: thirty-eight, successful, empty. The fox nickname wasn't about cunning anymore. It was about being hunted.

"You're running yourself into the ground, Sarah."

She stopped. A man sat on the bench by the pyramid's entrance, nursing a cigarette. The stranger from the elevator. The one who'd noticed her hands trembling during the presentation.

"I'm not running anywhere," she said, though she wasn't sure if she meant the jog or her life.

He exhaled smoke that drifted upward like ghost prayers. "That pyramid sucks everything out of people. I've watched it happen. They start running - running to meetings, running from themselves, running toward some finish line that keeps moving."

The fox inside her chest - the instinct that had kept her alive in corporate wars - suddenly went still. Something in his voice sounded like truth.

"What's the alternative?"

He shrugged, stubbing out the cigarette. "Stop running. Start howling."

She didn't leave with him that night. But she didn't go back to her apartment either. She walked until dawn, watching the pyramid shift from predator to mere building. Something wild and forgotten stirred beneath her ribs, something that knew the shape of freedom. The fox, she realized, had never been the one doing the hunting.
