The Glass Pyramid

Sarah smoothed her hair in the elevator mirror, catching the first silver threads at her temples. At forty-two, she'd stopped coloring them—a small rebellion against the polished perfection expected in the C-suite. The elevator dinged, carrying her upward to the forty-fifth floor, toward the glass pyramid that crowned the city's most prestigious financial firm.

Inside, Marcus was waiting. His bullish approach to negotiations had made them both wealthy, but lately, it had become something else—aggressive, territorial. He'd been drinking too much at client dinners, his charm curdling into something darker.

"You're avoiding me," he said, not looking up from his desk.

"I'm preparing for the Hong Kong meeting."

"Bull." He finally met her eyes. "You're planning something. I can feel it."

Sarah's chest tightened. She was planning something—had been for months. After fifteen years of building their investment pyramid together, layer by careful layer, she'd discovered what he'd done with the foundation. The offshore accounts. The fabricated returns. The clients who'd trusted them with their life savings, now evaporated into the ether of his gambling losses.

"Marcus," she said quietly, "we need to talk about the auditors."

He laughed harshly. "You think I don't know what you've been doing? Meeting with compliance behind my back? Running to the board?"

Sarah's hand went to her hair again, a nervous habit she'd never broken. "They'll find everything. The transaction records don't lie."

"But people do." He stood, his shadow falling across her. "We built this together, Sarah. You're not going to tear it down because of some technicalities."

"It's fraud, Marcus. Not technicalities."

"It's business," he snarled. "And if you go to the authorities, you go down with me. You signed every document. You approved every transfer."

The silence stretched between them, heavy with fifteen years of shared history, partnership, and now this terrible truth.

Sarah stood slowly. "Then I guess we both burn."

She walked out, leaving Marcus shouting her name. In the elevator, descending past the glass pyramid's reflection, she dialed the SEC investigator's number. Some foundations were built to collapse. Others had to be dismantled, piece by piece, before they crushed everyone inside.
