The Girl With Ocean Hair

Emma hated spinach. Every Tuesday, her mom served those wrinkly green leaves for dinner, and Emma always found creative ways to hide them—in her napkin, under her bread, or even once, in her pocket.

"It makes you strong," her mom always said. But Emma didn't feel strong. She just felt yucky.

One rainy afternoon, Emma was swimming laps at the community pool. She loved swimming more than anything. When she dove underwater, the world disappeared. No homework, no spinach, just the peaceful blue silence.

That's when she saw it—shiny at the bottom of the pool. Her dad's iphone! He must have dropped it during morning laps. Emma grabbed it and surfaced, wiping water from her eyes.

Something strange happened. As she held the phone, her wet hair began to glow. Not just any glow—a soft, shimmering green light, like sunlight through ocean waves. The iphone screen flickered on by itself, showing a tiny swimming mermaid who winked at her.

"You found the Ocean Phone," the mermaid squeaked. "Spinach breath gives you the power to talk to sea creatures!"

Emma's mouth fell open. The spinach she'd secretly eaten for lunch (because her friend Maya said it would make her faster at swimming) had actually given her a superpower!

For hours, Emma sat by the pool, her green-glowing hair dripping wet, talking with fish who swam up to hear her stories. She learned about their underwater kingdom, their favorite games, and their treasure chest full of lost toys.

"Come swim with us forever!" a little fish named Bubbles begged.

Emma shook her head. "I can't. But I'll visit every Tuesday after dinner. I promise!"

That night, Emma ate every bite of spinach on her plate. Her mom's eyes went wide.

"Since when do you like spinach?"

Emma touched her still-slightly-green hair and smiled. A secret between her and the ocean.

"Since I learned it gives you magic powers," she whispered.

And every Tuesday after that, Emma couldn't wait for spinach night. Because somewhere, in the blue depths below, her fish friends were waiting—and magic was always just one swim away.
