The Girl with Lightning Hair
Lily had the most extraordinary hair in the entire village. It wasn't just curly or straight, long or short. Her hair changed colors with her feelings—pink when she was happy, blue when she was sad, and gold when she was excited. The other children thought it was magical, and maybe it was.
One stormy evening, Lily was walking home through Whispering Woods when she heard a sniffling sound. Behind a large oak tree sat a enormous brown bear, his head buried in his paws. Lightning flashed across the sky, and the bear trembled.
"Hello?" Lily said softly. "Are you okay?"
The bear lifted his head, his eyes wide with fear. "I'm Barnaby," he rumbled. "And I'm terrified of thunder and lightning. Every time it flashes, I think the sky is cracking open."
Lily's hair turned a soft, comforting purple. She sat down beside Barnaby. "I have an idea! My grandmother says that if you count the seconds between the lightning and the thunder, you can tell how far away the storm is. It's not the sky cracking—it's just light and sound playing tag!"
Barnaby looked hopeful. "Really?"
"Really!" Lily said. "And look at me—I'll protect you. My hair is glowing like a nightlight!" Sure enough, her hair had turned a gentle, shimmering silver.
Together, they counted: "One... two... three... BOOM!" Each time, the storm sounded farther away. Barnaby stopped shaking and even began to smile.
"You're very brave, Lily," Barnaby said. "Thank you for helping me."
Lily's hair turned a warm, happy orange. "I wasn't brave at first—I was scared too! But helping you made me forget my own fear."
As the storm passed and stars appeared, Barnaby walked Lily home. From that day on, whenever lightning flashed, Lily would visit her bear friend, and her magical hair would glow silver in the darkness, reminding them both that courage means helping others even when you're afraid too.
