The Girl With Fire Hair
Lily had the brightest orange hair in the whole village. It wasn't just orange—it blazed like autumn leaves, like sunset clouds, like tiny flames dancing around her head. Other children had brown hair, black hair, even yellow hair. But nobody had hair like Lily's.
"Why can't I be normal?" Lily whispered, pulling her hood low over her fiery curls.
That afternoon, Lily ran to her secret spot behind the old palm tree that towered over her garden. Its fronds swayed like green feathers in the warm breeze. Lily curled up in the shade and cried quiet tears into her hands.
Suddenly, something splashed in the little puddle by her feet. Lily opened her eyes and gasped.
A tiny goldfish shimmered in the puddle, even though it was only rainwater. Its scales sparkled like actual gold, and it swam in circles as if performing a private dance.
"Hello," the goldfish said in a voice like silver bells.
Lily rubbed her eyes. "You can talk?"
"I'm a magical goldfish," the fish replied, flipping its golden tail. "I've swum through rain puddles, teacups, even a princess's tear drops once. But I've never seen anything as magnificent as your hair."
Lily touched her orange curls. "You really think so?"
The goldfish swam closer. "Your hair is like captured sunshine. Like honey poured into starlight. Like little flames of joy. Do you know what special gift fire has?"
Lily shook her head.
"Fire gives warmth. Fire lights up darkness. Fire brings people together. Your hair does those things too. When you smile, your orange hair shines so bright that others smile too. That's your magic."
Lily had never thought of it that way. She watched her reflection in the puddle. Maybe her hair wasn't strange. Maybe it was wonderful.
"Will you stay?" Lily asked.
"Magical goldfish must travel," said her new friend. "But remember: what makes you different is your gift. Now, will you help me? I need to reach the stream before the puddle dries up."
Lily carefully cupped her hands and the goldfish swam into her palm. It felt like holding pure happiness. She carried it all the way to the stream, where the fish swam free.
"Thank you, Fire-Hair Lily!" the goldfish called. "You're the best friend a magical fish could wish for!"
That day, Lily walked home with her hood down. Her orange hair blazed in the sunlight like a beautiful crown she would wear with pride forever.
