The Girl Who Swam with Starlight

Lily loved exploring the forest behind her house, but she'd never found anything magical—until the night she followed a firefly deeper than she'd ever gone before. It led her to a hidden clearing where a pool of water shimmered with an unearthly glow.

The pool wasn't filled with ordinary water. It was liquid starlight, rippling with silver and gold, casting dancing lights on the trees. Lily gasped as a small creature popped up from the glowing surface—a girl no bigger than Lily's hand, with wild purple hair that sparkled like amethysts.

"I'm Luna," the tiny girl said. "Want to see something amazing?" Luna grabbed a strand of her long, flowing hair and snipped it off with a seashell. To Lily's astonishment, the hair piece floated up into the sky and became a real star!

"Your hair... it makes stars?" Lily whispered.

Luna nodded. "But tonight's my birthday, and I'm supposed to make a whole constellation. I've run out of hair!" Luna's lip trembled. "Without my hair, I can't complete the pattern, and the night sky will have a hole in it."

Lily looked at her own long brown hair. Without thinking, she pulled a pair of scissors from her pocket and cut off a long lock. "Use mine," she said generously.

Luna's eyes widened. "Your hair will make the most beautiful stars—because they come from friendship!" Together, they cut more pieces of Lily's hair, and Luna tossed them into the sky one by one. Each strand became a brilliant star, joining to form a magnificent new constellation.

"What should we call it?" Lily asked as they admired their creation.

"The Friendship Constellation," Luna declared. "It will shine brightest when friends are together."

Lily visited Luna many times after that, always bringing something to share—a pretty stone, a flower, a story. And every night, she looked up at the sky and knew that somewhere, twinkling among the stars, was the proof that true friendship lasts forever, even across the distance between earth and sky.
