The Girl Who Swam Through Dreams

Lily loved her red striped hat more than anything. It was magic, she was sure — whenever she wore it, adventures found her. One sunny afternoon, while she was swimming in the lake, something extraordinary happened.

The water began to glow golden, and suddenly Lily wasn't swimming in water anymore. She was swimming through starlight, through clouds, through dreams themselves! Her hat stayed perfectly on her head.

She landed softly in a desert that shimmered with moonlight, even though it should have been daytime. Before her sat the most magnificent creature she had ever seen — a sphinx with the body of a lion and the head of a beautiful woman.

The sphinx had golden hair that flowed like a river of sunlight, and her eyes held the wisdom of a thousand years. But when she looked at Lily, those ancient eyes were sad.

"No one has visited me in three hundred years," the sphinx said softly. "Everyone fears my riddles. They forget that I only want to share what I know."

Lily adjusted her red hat and smiled. "I love riddles! My grandmother says the best friendships start with good questions."

The sphinx's face brightened. "Then here is my riddle: What has to be broken before you can use it?"

Lily thought about her swimming lessons, about how her instructor always said, 'You have to break the surface!' She grinned. "An egg!"

"Correct!" The sphinx clapped her paws together. "You see, I don't want to trick people. I want to find friends who aren't afraid to think, to wonder, to try."

The sphinx taught Lily to swim through the sky like a fish through water. She showed her how the stars made pictures in the desert sand. They shared stories and laughed until their sides hurt.

"Everyone needs friends who see them, not just their reputation," the sphinx said as the sun began to set. "Even magical creatures get lonely."

When it was time for Lily to return home, the sphinx gave her a special gift — a golden hair from her mane. "Whenever you wear this with your hat, you can visit me. No riddle required."

Lily swam back through the starlight, landing in the lake with a splash. Her hat was still on her head, and in her pocket glowed a golden hair.

She climbed onto the dock, dripping and happy. Some adventures, she learned, aren't about the magic you find. They're about the friends you make along the way — even if they happen to be sphinxes.
