The Girl Who Spied on a Zombie Goldfish
Lily pressed her eye against the cold glass of the fish tank. Inside, her pet goldfish Bubbles floated motionless at the top, upside down. Again.
"He's a zombie goldfish!" her brother Tommy had teased yesterday. "He keeps dying and coming back to life!"
Lily knew zombies weren't real. But Bubbles HAD been acting strange. Every morning, he'd float sideways like he was sleeping. But by afternoon, he'd be swimming happily again. What was going on?
That night, Lily became a spy. She made herself a detective badge from construction paper and packed a flashlight, a notebook, and some fish food. She would solve the mystery of Bubbles once and for all!
At midnight, Lily crept downstairs. The house was silent except for the refrigerator humming. She set up her spy station behind the living room curtain, where she could see the fish tank through the crack.
She waited. And waited. Just when her eyelids began to feel heavy, something magical happened.
Tiny sparkles of light appeared around the fish tank. They swirled together until they formed a tiny fairy no bigger than Lily's thumb! The fairy sprinkled sparkling dust over Bubbles, who immediately perked up and started swimming in happy circles.
"There you are, my sleepy friend!" the fairy whispered, her voice sounding like wind chimes. "Time for your midnight adventure!"
Lily gasped. The fairy turned toward her and smiled.
"Oh! A human spy!" The fairy giggled. "I'm Luna, the Fish Dreams Fairy. Every night, I visit fish who sleep all day. In their dreams, they explore magical oceans and have wonderful adventures. Bubbles isn't a zombie—he's just resting after his exciting dreams!"
Lily stepped out from behind the curtain. "Can I see his dreams?"
Luna sprinkled some fairy dust toward Lily, and suddenly she could see them too! Bubbles was dreaming of swimming through rainbow coral reefs, playing with seahorses, and discovering treasure chests filled with shiny pearls.
"Fish have amazing imaginations," Luna said. "They explore magical worlds while they sleep. That's why they're so peaceful during the day."
Lily smiled. She had solved the mystery! Bubbles wasn't a zombie at all. He was a dream adventurer!
"Can you keep my secret?" Luna asked. "Other fish might get jealous if they knew about the magic dream dust."
"I promise," Lily whispered. "Being a spy means keeping secrets."
From that night on, Lily watched Bubbles differently. She didn't worry when he floated sideways at the top of his tank. She knew he was just resting after his magical dream adventures. And sometimes, just before she fell asleep, Lily imagined she could hear tiny wind chimes, reminding her that magic was real—if you knew where to look for it.
The moral? Sometimes things that seem mysterious have wonderful explanations if you look with kindness and curiosity instead of fear.
