The Girl Who Ran to Magic

Lily was always running. Running to catch the morning bus, running through the park at recess, running home with her backpack bouncing against her spine. Her wild red hair streamed behind her like flames, tangling in the wind she loved so much.

One Tuesday afternoon, while running through the old woods behind her house, Lily discovered something impossible. Between two ancient oak trees stood a tiny sphinx, no bigger than a garden gnome, carved from smooth gray stone. But as Lily stepped closer, the sphinx opened its emerald eyes.

"You've been running past me for months," the sphinx spoke in a voice like rustling leaves. "Today, you finally noticed."

Lily's hair stood on end. "You're alive!"

"I am the guardian of Hidden Pond," said the sphinx. "And you, wild-haired girl, are the first to see me in fifty years. Perhaps you're ready to meet what I protect."

The sphinx stepped aside, revealing a crystal-clear pond that hadn't existed a moment before. Swimming in its center was a goldfish the size of a dinner plate, with scales that shimmered like sunset.

"One question," said the sphinx. "Answer correctly, and the goldfish will grant you one wish."

The riddle was simple: "What has wings but cannot fly, what has roots but cannot grow?"

Lily thought hard, then pointed at her own tangled hair. "A dandelion!"

The goldfish swam closer. "Correct. What is your wish?"

Lily could have wished for straight hair that never tangled, or to never have to run late again. Instead, she said, "I wish for this pond to stay protected forever, so other children can discover magic too."

The sphinx smiled. "A wise wish from one who runs with her heart open."

That day, Lily learned that the real magic wasn't in wishes granted—it was in running toward wonder with kindness in your heart. And sometimes, the best adventures find you when you're simply running toward home.
