The Girl Who Could Breathe Underwater

Lily was different from other kids. While they played games on their phones, she preferred exploring. One hot afternoon, she sat by the creek, watching her reflection in the water.

Her long brown hair floated around her face like seaweed. She loved the way the sunlight made the water sparkle like thousands of tiny diamonds.

"I wish I could see what's underneath," she whispered.

Suddenly, her iphone slipped from her pocket and splashed into the creek. Lily gasped and jumped in after it.

But something strange happened. Instead of holding her breath and rushing to the surface, Lily could breathe!

The water didn't feel wet anymore. It felt like warm, silky air.

She swam deeper, following her sinking phone. Fish with scales like rainbow jewels darted past her. A turtle with a shell the color of an orange waved slowly as it floated by.

"You're different," said a soft voice.

Lily turned to see a mermaid with hair made of flowing seaweed and eyes that sparkled like pearls.

"I'm Lily," she said.

"I'm Marina," the mermaid replied. "You've been granted a special gift. The water chose you because you've always respected it. You never littered. You always wondered about the creatures living beneath the surface."

Lily's phone floated into Marina's hand. When Lily touched it, the screen showed not apps, but beautiful images of coral reefs and dancing jellyfish.

"This isn't really a phone anymore," Marina explained. "It's now a window between worlds. Whenever you want to visit, just touch it to water."

Lily spent the afternoon swimming with mermaids, racing dolphins, and discovering gardens of coral in colors she'd never imagined.

"Remember," Marina said as Lily prepared to leave, "the water remembers kindness. Take care of it, and it will always welcome you."

Back on the bank, Lily's hair dried in the sun. She looked at the creek differently now. It wasn't just water — it was a whole world, full of magic and friends.

And sometimes, when no one was watching, Lily would touch her phone to the water's surface, and dive back into her secret underwater paradise.
