The Girl Who Chased Lightning
Lily was a girl who loved storms. While other children hid under blankets when thunder rattled the windows, Lily pressed her nose against the glass, watching the sky dance.
One evening, as lightning flashed across the dark clouds, Lily noticed something strange. Each bolt of lightning that struck the surface of the nearby pond didn't just disappear — it sent ripples of glowing blue light across the water. And in those ripples, she could see pictures.
She saw a meadow filled with flowers that changed colors when you touched them. She saw trees with leaves made of crystal. She saw creatures with wings like rainbows.
But most importantly, she saw something moving in the distance — something small and frightened.
"Milo!" Lily gasped. It was her cat, who had been missing for three days.
The next flash of lightning showed Milo trapped on a tiny island in the middle of Whispering Creek, which had swollen from the heavy rains. His eyes were wide with fear.
Lily grabbed her yellow raincoat and boots. She was running out the door before her mother could ask where she was going. The rain pattered against her hood as she splashed through puddles, following the glow from each lightning strike.
The storm grew stronger as she reached the creek. Lightning illuminated the rushing water, which was deeper and faster than usual. There was no way across — no bridge, no logs, nothing.
Tears mixed with rain on Lily's cheeks. Milo meowed from the small island, huddled under a bush.
Another bolt of lightning struck the water nearby. This time, Lily saw something impossible in its ripples — a path of glowing stones appearing just beneath the surface, stepping stones that shimmered with magic.
She didn't think. She didn't worry about getting wet. She stepped onto the first stone, and it held her weight. The water felt warm, not cold, as if the lightning had given it special powers.
Stone by stone, Lily made her way across the creek, running now as the path began to fade. She reached the island just as the last glowing stone disappeared beneath the water.
Milo leaped into her arms, purring so loudly she could feel it against her chest. The rain suddenly stopped, and the clouds parted to reveal a sky full of stars.
On the way back, Lily noticed something in her pocket — a small, smooth stone that still glowed faintly with blue light, a gift from the magic lightning.
That night, as Milo curled up at the foot of her bed, Lily drifted to sleep wondering what other secrets the storms held, and what other adventures waited in the ripples of lightning on water.
