The Girl Who Caught Lightning

Lily had the most magnificent hair in the whole village. It was bright orange, like sunset clouds, and it poked out in every direction, impossible to tame. The other children had smooth brown or black hair that stayed neatly in place. They called her 'Lightning Head' and laughed when the wind made her hair crackle with static.

One evening, a terrible storm rolled over the mountains. Lightning flashed across the sky like nature's own fireworks, and thunder shook the little houses. Lily watched from her window, mesmerized by the dancing bolts of light. Suddenly, a particularly bright flash of lightning struck the old oak tree in her backyard!

Lily rushed outside in her yellow rainboots. Near the smoking tree sat a tiny creature—a Lightning Sprite—with sparking blue skin and wings that glowed like fireflies. The sprite was trapped under a fallen branch, its light growing dimmer.

'Please help me,' the sprite squeaked. 'I was dancing too close to the ground and got stuck.' Lily didn't hesitate. She pulled with all her might, her wild orange hair standing even straighter from the magic in the air. Together, they freed the little creature.

The sprite did a joyful flip in the rain. 'Thank you! You're braver than anyone I've met.' It touched Lily's orange hair with a tiny sparkling finger. 'This hair of yours—it's special. It catches magic. That's why the other children tease you. They don't understand yet that different means wonderful.'

The sprite bounced upward, joining the storm clouds. Lightning flashed in beautiful patterns, spelling out Lily's name across the sky. From that night on, whenever storms came, Lily's hair glowed softly, and she knew that being different was exactly what made her magical. The other children stopped laughing and started watching the sky with her, hoping to catch their own bit of wonder.
