The Girl Who Caught Lightning

Mabel had the most extraordinary orange hair anyone in Willowbrook had ever seen. It wasn't just orange—it blazed like sunset clouds, tangled like golden vines, and bounced like springs when she ran. Children whispered she must be magical. Mabel didn't feel magical. She felt ordinary, except for her hair and her dog, Barnaby.

Barnaby was a scruffy terrier with one ear that stood up and one that flopped down. He followed Mabel everywhere, his tail wagging like a metronome keeping time to their adventures.

One stormy afternoon, Mabel and Barnaby hid in the old treehouse. Lightning flashed—crackle, BOOM—turning the sky purple.

"I wish I could catch lightning," Mabel whispered, pressing her nose against the wooden window frame. "Just once, to see what it feels like."

Barnaby whined softly and nudged her hand with his wet nose.

Suddenly, the biggest lightning bolt of all struck the oak tree right beside them. The treehouse shuddered. Mabel squeezed her eyes shut.

When she opened them, something amazing floated in the air between her and Barnaby—a tiny spark, no bigger than a firefly, glowing and pulsing with soft white light.

"It's lightning," Mabel breathed. "A piece of lightning!"

Barnaby barked happily, and the spark zipped toward him, swirling around his floppy ear. The dog's fur began to glow. His tail wagged faster and faster until—WHOOSH—Barnaby floated into the air!

"Barnaby!" Mabel cried.

The lightning spark settled on her orange hair, and suddenly Mabel understood. The lightning hadn't just struck the tree. It had chosen them.

That afternoon, Mabel and Barnaby discovered that lightning had given them a special gift: whenever they held hands and thought brave thoughts together, they could make small glowing sparks dance between them. They weren't powerful enough to hurt anyone—just enough to create wonder.

They used their gift to light the way when their baby sister was afraid of the dark. They made patterns of stars appear on the ceiling when their grandfather couldn't sleep. And once, when a new boy named Leo moved to town and looked lonely, Mabel and Barnaby made a tiny lightning spark form the shape of a heart, making him smile for the first time.

"Your hair really IS magical," Leo told her.

Mabel shook her head. "It's not my hair. It's us. Bravery plus friendship equals magic."

And Barnaby, with his glowing fur and wiggling tail, couldn't have agreed more.
