The Girl Who Caught Lightning

In a tiny village where rainbows appeared before every storm, lived a girl named Mali with the most extraordinary hair anyone had ever seen. Her dark curls bounced like springs and tumbled down her back, but Mali didn't know her hair held a magical secret.

One afternoon, Mali's grandmother handed her a papaya from the oldest tree in their garden. "This papaya only ripens during storm season," she whispered. "It holds lightning magic."

Mali took a bite of the sweet, orange fruit. It tasted like sunshine mixed with something electric and alive. Suddenly, dark clouds gathered above. Thunder rumbled like a giant's belly laugh, and tiny lightning bolts danced across the sky.

One small lightning bolt spiraled down from the clouds and touched Mali's hair!

Her curls began to glow with golden light, crackling softly like tiny sparks. Mali wasn't scared. She felt powerful! The lightning had given her hair magic.

Her best friend Kofi ran over during the storm. "Mali! Your hair is glowing!"

Just then, they heard crying. Little Zara had dropped her favorite wooden doll into the rushing river, which was swollen from the rain. The current was too strong for anyone to swim.

Mali closed her eyes and concentrated. Her glowing hair reached toward the river like golden ribbons. A tiny lightning spark jumped from her curls and zapped the water, gently pushing the doll toward the bank where Zara could grab it.

"Thank you!" Zara cheered.

Mali's grandmother appeared. "Your hair magic comes from the papaya's gift," she explained. "But remember — magic is meant for helping others, not for showing off."

Mali nodded solemnly. She understood. From that day on, whenever storms came to the village, Mali would eat a papaya, catch lightning in her hair, and use her special gift to help anyone in need.

The villagers called her the Girl Who Caught Lightning, but Mali knew the truth: she had simply learned that the best kind of magic is the kind that comes from kindness.
