The Girl Who Caught Lightning
Mira had the most curious hair in all of Willow Creek. Every morning, she'd wake to find tiny orange ribbons woven through her curls, appearing as if by magic. Her grandmother said they were gifts from the sky spirits, but Mira knew better—they were signs.
One summer evening, as the first stars blinked awake, Mira sat on her porch watching the storm clouds gather. Thunder rumbled like a sleepy giant waking from a long nap. Then she saw it: a bolt of lightning that didn't fade. It danced among the clouds, golden and playful, as if looking for something.
"Come down!" Mira called, cupping her hands around her mouth. To her astonishment, the lightning zigzagged closer, floating just above her head like a glowing ribbon.
"I've been searching everywhere for someone who isn't afraid," the lightning sparkled in a voice like wind chimes. "Will you help me find my way home? I fell from the Sky Kingdom during last night's storm."
Mira's heart raced with excitement. She grabbed her favorite orange backpack and climbed onto her bicycle. The lightning curled around her shoulders like a warm scarf.
Together they raced through firefly-lit meadows and across babbling brooks, following the lightning's memories of home. They helped a lost rabbit find its burrow. They rescued a baby bird that had fallen from its nest. Each act of kindness made the lightning shine brighter.
At last they reached the highest hill, where the sky touched the earth. The lightning's family streaked down from the clouds, rejoicing. "You've learned our greatest secret," the lightning told Mira. "Kindness is the brightest light of all."
As a thank-you gift, the lightning touched Mira's forehead. From that day on, whenever she helped someone, tiny sparks of orange light danced in her hair—a reminder that the greatest magic lives in a kind heart.
And sometimes, if you look carefully during a summer storm, you might still see Mira's lightning friend zigzagging through the clouds, watching over the girl who taught everyone that the bravest thing you can do is help others.
