The Girl Who Caught Lightning

Maya had the wildest hair in town. It poufed out like a fluffy cloud and sparkled in the sun. Every morning, she'd try to comb it smooth, but by lunchtime, POOF! Her hair would bounce right back into its favorite shape — a big, curly celebration.

One stormy evening, Maya sat by her window watching the sky dance. CRACK! A bolt of lightning flashed across the darkness. But this wasn't ordinary lightning. It was purple and pink and swirled like cotton candy.

The next morning, Maya found something amazing in her garden. A tiny glowing creature, no bigger than a butterfly, was tangled in her hair. It crackled softly and smelled like ozone and rainbows.

'Hello?' Maya whispered.

The little creature buzzed happily and nuzzled against her curls. Maya laughed as her hair stood up with static, floating around her face like a magical halo.

'I'll call you Spark!' she declared.

Every day after school, Maya and Spark would play. Spark taught Maya how to make her hair glow in the dark. Maya taught Spark how to play hide-and-seek in the flowers. They were the best of friends, even though nobody else could see Spark.

One day, a bully named Jackson pulled Maya's hair. 'Messy-haired weirdo,' he sneered.

Spark zipped out from Maya's curls and buzzed protectively around her. Jackson's eyes went wide as the tiny lightning creature created a beautiful light show — miniature purple bolts dancing in the air, spelling out MAYA in glowing letters.

'Whoa,' Jackson breathed. 'That's the coolest thing ever.'

Maya smiled. 'Would you like to meet my friend?'

Soon, the whole neighborhood gathered in Maya's backyard. Spark performed magnificent lightning dances while Maya's wild hair caught every bit of magic, making it sparkle like a night sky full of stars.

That night, Maya brushed her curly hair and smiled at her reflection in the mirror. Her messy hair wasn't weird at all — it was perfect, because it was exactly the kind of hair that could catch lightning and make a friend.

And sometimes, the most wonderful friendships come when you least expect them — even if they fall right into your hair.
