The Girl Who Braided Starlight

Maya's hair had a mind of its own. It curled around her ears when she was happy and stood straight up when she was surprised. Her grandmother said it was magical hair, the kind that could catch dreams.

One night, Maya sat by the pond, watching her reflection shimmer in the moonlight. Something splashed!

A tiny bull no bigger than her hand climbed onto a lily pad. But this wasn't an ordinary bull—his coat shimmered like stardust, and his horns glowed softly.

"I'm Orion," the bull squeaked. "I fell from the sky while swimming through the Milky Way. My constellation is falling apart without me!"

Maya gasped. "You're a star bull?"

Orion nodded sadly. "I need to swim back up there, but I'm stuck. Earth water is too heavy."

Maya's hair suddenly curled around her shoulders—her thinking curl! She had an idea.

"My grandmother said magical hair can weave impossible things," Maya said. "What if I braid stardust into my hair? Then you can climb up like a rope!"

Orion's eyes twinkled. "But how will we reach the stars?"

"We'll practice swimming first!" Maya declared.

Every night for a week, they swam together in the pond. Orion taught Maya to glide like a star through water. Maya taught Orion to believe in impossible things.

On the seventh night, Maya's hair glowed brighter than ever. She gathered stardust that had fallen from Orion's coat and wove it into her curls. Her hair grew longer and longer, reaching toward the sky like a shimmering rope of light.

"Swim up!" Maya called, holding her glowing hair steady.

Orion climbed the braid of starlight, higher and higher, until he reached the darkest part of the sky. Suddenly, he blazed brilliant white, taking his place in the constellation.

The hunter in the stars was whole again.

From that night on, Maya's hair curled around her shoulders whenever she looked up at Orion—her friend among the stars. And sometimes, if you look closely at the constellation, you'll see the tiniest extra star, winking like a secret between a girl and her bull.
