The Girl Who Befriended the Last Sphinx
Lily loved exploring the old stone path behind her house, especially with Barnaby, her fluffy golden dog, trotting happily beside her. One foggy afternoon, the path led them somewhere they'd never been before — to a crumbling stone archway covered in sparkling green moss.
"Wait here, Barnaby," Lily whispered, but her dog had already squeezed through a gap in the stones. Lily followed and gasped.
In a hidden garden stood a small sphinx, no bigger than a garden statue, with wise amber eyes and tiny wings that shimmered like morning dew. The sphinx looked lonely.
"Hello," said Lily bravely. "I'm Lily, and this is Barnaby."
The sphinx's eyes lit up. "I've been waiting for someone like you for three hundred years," she said in a voice like wind chimes. "I am Sphinx, guardian of the Lost Riddle Garden. But without visitors, my magic has been fading away."
Lily's heart swelled with sadness. "Can we help?"
Sphinx smiled. "Perhaps! But first, you must solve my riddle: What has legs but cannot run?"
Barnaby barked and started running in joyful circles around them, his golden fur catching the sunlight.
Lily thought hard. Then she smiled. "A table! Or a chair!"
"Correct!" Sphinx cheered, and suddenly, the garden burst into color. Flowers bloomed in brilliant purples and oranges. Butterflies with wings like tiny stained glass windows danced through the air.
"You've brought the magic back!" Sphinx said. "Would you and Barnaby visit me sometimes?"
"Every day!" Lily promised.
And so, running became their favorite game — Lily and Barnaby racing through the magical garden with their new friend, whose riddles and wisdom made every afternoon an adventure. Sphinx taught them that the best magic isn't in spells or potions, but in friendship, kindness, and never forgetting to wonder at the world.
Sometimes, the most wonderful discoveries are waiting just beyond the ordinary, especially when you have a faithful friend by your side and an open heart ready for magic.
