The Girl Who Befriended a Sphinx
Lily loved visiting the stream behind her house. Every afternoon, she'd skip smooth stones across the surface and count the ripples until they disappeared. But one hot summer day, the stones wouldn't skip. They splashed and sank straight down.
Curious, Lily peeked into the deeper part of the stream. There, resting on a mossy rock, was the most peculiar creature she'd ever seen. It had the body of a magnificent cat, wings like a golden eagle, and a wise human face that sparkled like morning dew.
The creature wasn't made of fur or feathers. It was made entirely of water, flowing and swirling yet holding its shape perfectly.
"Are you a sphinx?" Lily whispered, remembering the pictures in her storybook.
The water sphinx nodded, its watery mane rippling. "I am the Guardian of the Stream, but I have forgotten what that means. No one has visited me in one hundred years."
Lily felt sad. She knew how it felt to be lonely. "I'll visit you every day! We can be friends!"
The sphinx's eyes widened. "Friends? But I'm just water. I can't play games or tell jokes."
"But you can make beautiful ripples," Lily said, dipping her hand near the sphinx. "And you can listen. That's what friends do."
Every day that summer, Lily visited her new friend. She told stories about school, her dreams, and her wish to see the ocean. The sphinx shared ancient secrets about the forest and showed her how water could dance in sunlight.
Then came the terrible drought. The stream slowed to a trickle. Grass turned brown. The village well ran dry.
"My friend," the sphinx said sadly, "I must leave. The stream can no longer sustain me."
"No!" Lily cried. "There must be something we can do!"
The sphinx thought for a long moment. "There is an ancient spell. If a true friend offers their most precious gift, water will flow abundantly again."
Without hesitation, Lily held out her favorite skipping stone, smooth and perfect in her palm. "Take this. It's my treasure."
The sphinx smiled, and its watery form glowed bright blue. The stone dissolved into pure, sparkling liquid. Suddenly, the stream surged with fresh, clear water. The sphinx swelled with joy, its wings spreading wide.
"Not the stone," the sphinx whispered. "Your friendship was the true gift all along. That is the magic that moves water."
The village was saved. And every day, Lily still visits her friend at the stream, where they make ripples together and watch the water dance in the sunlight.
