The Girl in the Fox Hoodie

Maya's hair was supposed to be caramel highlights. Instead, it came out neon orange — like a traffic cone had exploded on her head.

"It's bold," her mom said, wincing.

"It's a disaster," Maya groaned, pulling her hood up.

She spent the rest of summer break hiding indoors, spying on her classmates through Instagram stories. That's when she noticed Fox — the nickname everyone gave to the new girl, Sasha, because of that oversized fox-embroidered hoodie she wore every single day. Sasha had zero followers from their school, yet she posted photos of herself doing ordinary things like eating vitamin gummies or reading in the park, completely unbothered.

Maya started lowkey stalking her account at 2 AM, fascinated by how someone could just exist without performing for an audience. It was mortifying behavior, really, but she couldn't stop.

Then came the first day of junior year. Maya walked in with her hair still unmistakably orange, ready to be roasted. But then she saw HER — Sasha in that same fox hoodie, sitting alone at a lunch table, unwrapping a vitamin C packet.

Their eyes met. Maya froze.

"Hey," Sasha called out. "Your hair. It's sick."

Maya blinked. "For real?"

"Yeah. It looks like fox fur," Sasha said, tapping the fox on her chest. "We're basically twins now."

Something in Maya's chest loosened. She sat down, and they talked through lunch about everything and nothing — about the pressure to be aesthetic, about how exhausting it was to curate a persona, about how sometimes you just wanted to take your vitamin gummies and disappear.

"I used to spy on your posts," Maya admitted finally. "That sounds so creepy now that I say it out loud."

Sasha laughed. "I know. I saw you in my followers every night." She grinned. "I was waiting for you to say hi.

Maya's orange hair wasn't a disaster after all. It was exactly what she needed to find her fox — and finally stop spying from the sidelines.
