The Girl Behind the Fox

Maya pulled her dad's old baseball hat down low, hoping it would act like camouflage against the fluorescent lights of the community pool party. She wasn't supposed to be here—not really. Her mom had dropped her off to 'make friends,' but Maya felt like a spy behind enemy lines, watching the popular kids splash and scream from her corner bench.

Her iphone buzzed in her pocket. Probably just another group chat where everyone else's messages were already read and acknowledged. Maya checked anyway, because maybe this time would be different. It wasn't.

Water droplets splashed onto her phone screen as Tyler—the guy she'd been lowkey crushing on since September—shook his hair like a golden retriever near her bench. His laugh carried across the pool deck, effortless and bright.

'Nice hat,' he said, dripping pool water onto the concrete. 'You hiding or something?'

Maya's face burned. 'Just... you know. SPF situation.'

Tyler nodded like this made perfect sense. 'Solid. Hey, you going to Jen's thing Saturday? Everyone's saying she's finally inviting—'

'Fox from English?' Maya interrupted, then immediately regretted it. Fox was the nickname they'd given the new girl with the wild red hair who sat in the back of honors English, answering every question with this quiet confidence that made Maya simultaneously hate and admire her.

'Yeah,' Tyler looked surprised. 'How'd you know?'

Maya shrugged. She knew because she'd been Fox too, in her old school. The quiet one. The one people whispered about before they actually talked to. But here, she was just... Maya. The girl who didn't quite fit anywhere.

'I might come,' Maya said, surprised at her own voice.

Tyler's face lit up. 'You should. Bring the hat. It's got vibes.' He pushed off the bench and dove back into the water, sending another splash her way.

Maya wiped her phone screen and typed a single message into the group chat: 'I'm in for Saturday.'

Her hat wasn't hiding her anymore. It was just a hat. And maybe that was enough.
