The Girl at the Pyramid's Peak
Maya stared at her iPhone, the blue light illuminating her frustrated expression. Another group chat she'd been left out of. Her best friend since seventh grade, Jenna, had been drifting away all sophomore year, ever since she'd climbed the social pyramid at Northwood High.
"You good?" asked Sarah, sliding into the cafeteria seat across from her. Sarah was cool—like, actually cool, not the fake kind Jenna had become.
Maya tucked a stray curl behind her ear, self-conscious about the frizz that humidity always brought out. Her hair never behaved, unlike the sleek, straightened perfection of the popular girls at the top of the pyramid.
"Just tired," Maya said. "Everything's fine."
But it wasn't fine. The cafeteria was arranged like a literal pyramid—the varsity cheerleaders and football players at the center tables, cascading outward through increasingly less exclusive tiers. And at the very apex sat Raven, the Sphinx of Northwood High. She said almost nothing, yet somehow everyone hung on her every word. She had this magnetic, mysterious energy that made people desperate to impress her.
Raven's hair was this wild, gorgeous mane of dark curls that she never straightened, never apologized for. She owned it. Maya had been crushing on her confidence since eighth grade.
"So," Sarah said, lowering her voice. "Raven's having a thing this Friday. Her parents are out of town."
Maya's heart did this little flip thing. "And?"
"And I got invited." Sarah grinned. "Plus ones are allowed."
The invitation felt like ascending the pyramid's peak. But as Maya considered it, she realized something—Jenna would be there. Jenna, who now sat with the varsity crowd and barely acknowledged Maya in the halls anymore.
That night, Maya stood before her mirror, really looking at herself. She ran her fingers through her curls, let them spring free instead of fighting them into submission. She texted Jenna: *Hey, heard about Raven's party. You going?*
Three dots appeared, then disappeared. No response.
Friday arrived. Maya walked into Raven's house, hair wild, wearing her favorite vintage band tee instead of the trendy outfits Jenna now lived in. She spotted Jenna immediately—laughing with the cheer squad, hair perfectly straightened, holding court like she'd always belonged there.
And then Maya locked eyes with Raven. The Sphinx smiled, like she knew something Maya was just figuring out.
"Nice hair," Raven said.
And in that moment, Maya understood. The pyramid wasn't something to climb—it was something to dismantle. She didn't need Jenna's approval or anyone else's. She just needed to find the people who saw her.
Sarah found her in the kitchen, pouring punch. "You okay?"
Maya smiled, genuine. "Yeah. Actually, I am."
Her iPhone buzzed in her pocket—probably another group chat she wasn't part of. She left it there. Some pyramids are meant to crumble, and real friends don't leave you behind to climb them.
