The Geometry of Regret

lightningpyramidbear

The lightning illuminated the corporate pyramid chart on his office wall, each level a reminder of everyone he'd stepped on to reach the top. Marcus sat alone at 2 AM, whisky in hand, staring at the hierarchy he'd spent twenty years climbing. Tomorrow, the SEC investigation would begin, and the entire scheme would collapse.

He thought about Elena waiting at home. She'd asked him to bear one burden tonight: tell her the truth about where the money came from. He couldn't. The pyramid scheme had bought their house, her car, the illusion of security they'd built their marriage upon.

The storm outside intensified, lightning flashing like strobe lights against the glass. Marcus remembered the first time he'd justified the commission fraud—just a temporary fix, he'd told himself. But like an addiction, the deception had grown, required more lies to sustain itself. Now the weight of it was crushing.

He poured another drink. His phone buzzed—Elena again. She knew. She must know.

Outside, thunder rattled the windows. A sudden flash of lightning revealed his reflection in the glass: tired eyes, greying temples, a man who'd traded his integrity for corner-office views and quarterly bonuses. He'd become the kind of predator he used to despise.

The bear of his conscience—something he'd starved for two decades—finally awakened. Marcus stood up, walked to the window, and watched the lightning tear through the sky.

He picked up his phone and called his lawyer. Then he called Elena.

"I need to tell you something," he said, his voice breaking. "And it's going to change everything."
