The Geometry of Bad Hair

Maya stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror, her normally coils now behaving like she'd stuck her finger in an electrical socket. The humidity had won. Again. Her hair was basically defying all laws of physics today, and she had exactly twenty minutes before the biggest party of the year.

"You're not actually gonna go like that, are you?" Her younger brother leaned against the doorframe, looking way too smug for someone whose hair currently resembled a scared hedgehog.

"Shut up, Leo." Maya yanked a headband from the drawer. "It's fine. It's artsy. It's—"

"It's a pyramid," he deadpanned. "A pyramid of frizz."

Maya groaned and slumped against the counter. This was it. The social hierarchy of sophomore year was already fragile enough—she wasn't trying to enter the party looking like she'd lost a fight with a hair dryer. The pyramid of popularity at school had tiers, and tonight was supposed to be her chance to climb.

She thought about skipping. Really. Just texting Tamara that she was "sick" and spending the night watching Netflix with her papaya-scented candle collection (don't judge, it smelled like a tropical vacation).

But then her phone buzzed. Tamara: *dude where r u?? chris is literally asking about u*

Maya's stomach did that thing—like papaya seeds suddenly swirling around inside her. Chris. The guy she'd been lowkey crushing on since August, who somehow didn't seem to notice that she existed beyond borrowing pencils in pre-calc.

She stared at her reflection again. The hair situation was still catastrophic, but...

Whatever. Maya grabbed her jacket, threw on some hoop earrings, and decided to own it. If her hair wanted to be a pyramid, fine. She'd be the pharaoh of bad hair days and nobody could stop her.

The pyramid of popularity could wait. Tonight, she was building her own vibe.
