The Gentle Bull's Game
Every Saturday, children gathered at Farmer McGregor's field for baseball. Ten-year-old Timmy loved these days, especially with his loyal dog Rusty bounding beside him, tail wagging like a metronome of joy.
One afternoon, Timmy noticed something strange—a massive brown bull peering through the wooden fence. The other children froze. Bulls were dangerous, everyone knew that. But this bull's chocolate-brown eyes held only curiosity.
"Hello there," Timmy whispered softly, approaching slowly. The bull gently nudged his hand, surprising everyone.
"I think he wants to play," Timmy said, noticing how the bull's gaze followed the baseball.
Timmy tossed the ball toward the fence. Instead of charging, the bull used his giant horns to bat it back—perfectly. The children gasped.
Rusty, usually timid around large animals, approached cautiously. When the bull lowered his head, Rusty licked his nose. The bull's mouth stretched into what looked remarkably like a smile.
"I'll call you Barnaby," Timmy decided.
Each Saturday, Barnaby waited by the fence. Timmy and the children invented games they could play through the fence—baseball with Barnaby as the gentlest batter anyone had ever seen.
One day, Rusty chased the baseball into Farmer McGregor's cornfield and didn't return. Timmy's heart sank. The cornstalks towered like a green maze.
Barnaby pushed through the wooden fence with surprising grace. "Moo," he said firmly, nudging Timmy toward the cornfield.
Together, Timmy and Barnaby searched. Rusty's collar jingled from deep within the towering corn. Barnaby parted the stalks easily with his powerful shoulders, creating a path for Timmy.
They found Rusty curled around the baseball, guarding it proudly. Barnaby lowered his giant body so Timmy could climb onto his back. Rusty hopped on too, and Barnaby carried them both home like a faithful horse.
Farmer McGregor witnessed everything. Instead of being angry, he smiled. "That old bull hasn't shown this much spirit since he was a calf," the farmer said.
From that day on, Barnaby joined every baseball game. The children learned that friendship comes in all shapes and sizes, and that sometimes the most frightening-looking creatures have the gentlest hearts.
And Rusty? He became the world's only dog who could say he'd ridden a bull, though he never quite understood why the other dogs at the park didn't believe his magnificent tale.
