The Gardener Who Came Alive at Night

Lily loved her grandmother's garden, but lately the vegetables looked droopy and sad. The papaya tree had stopped growing sweet fruit. The spinach leaves lay limp on the ground.

One night, Lily heard a strange sound. *Scritch, scratch.* She peeked through her window and gasped.

A zombie was in the garden!

But this zombie wasn't scary at all. He wore a floppy straw hat and overalls with patches on the knees. His green skin glowed softly in the moonlight. And he was... gardening?

The zombie hummed a merry tune as he watered the papaya tree with sparkling silver water. He patted the spinach gently and whispered, "Grow strong, little friends."

Lily crept outside. "Who are you?" she whispered.

The zombie jumped! His buttons fell off and rolled away. He picked them up with a smile.

"I'm Zed," he said in a voice like rustling leaves. "I was lonely once, but now I have my garden."

"But you're..." Lily couldn't say it.

"A zombie?" Zed nodded. "I died a hundred years ago. But I loved gardening so much that I came back. My magic helps plants grow when everyone else is sleeping."

Zed offered Lily a slice of moon-brightened papaya. It was the sweetest thing she'd ever tasted! Then he showed her how the spinach leaves had started to perk up, turning a beautiful emerald green.

"You see," Zed said softly, "just because something looks different doesn't mean it's scary. And sometimes, the most magical friends come from the most unexpected places."

Lily smiled. She helped Zed plant papaya seeds and spinach sprouts until dawn. As the sun rose, Zed grew translucent and faded away.

"See you tonight, little gardener," he whispered.

The next morning, Lily's grandmother couldn't believe her eyes. The papaya tree was bursting with golden fruit. The spinach stood tall and proud. And in the middle of the garden, someone had spelled out words in spinach leaves:

*FRIENDS GROW IN EVERY GARDEN.*
