The Gardener's Secret Friend
Lily loved visiting her grandmother's garden. It was the most magical place in the world, with flowers that seemed to sing in the breeze and trees that whispered secrets. But her favorite spot was the old fountain by the garden gate, where cool, sparkling water danced in the sunlight.
One afternoon, as Lily sat by the fountain sketching in her notebook, she heard a rustling sound behind the blackberry bushes. Out popped a scruffy little dog with one floppy ear and a coat that looked like it had been patched together from different colors of fur.
"Hello there," Lily said softly, holding out her hand.
The dog wagged its tail cautiously and approached, sniffing her fingers. Just then, Lily's grandmother came around the corner with a watering can.
"Ah, I see you've met Buster," Grandma said with a knowing smile. "He's what we call a zombie dog."
Lily's eyes went wide. "A zombie dog? Like in the scary stories?"
Grandma laughed. "Oh no, not that kind. Zombie comes from an old word that means 'spirit' or 'soul.' You see, Buster was a lonely stray who wandered into our garden last winter. He was sick and scared, but we nursed him back to health. Now he's our garden guardian. He's like a spirit of friendship — that's what zombie really means."
Buster seemed to understand, resting his head on Lily's knee. She carefully poured some fresh water into her cupped hands, and the grateful dog drank happily.
"Real friends," Grandma said gently, "are like water for the soul. They help us grow, just like these flowers. And sometimes the most wonderful friends come when we least expect them."
Every day that summer, Lily returned to the garden. She and Buster would explore together, finding secret paths and hidden flowers. She even helped Grandma plant a new bed of marigolds, using water from the fountain to help them grow strong.
Lily learned that true friendship isn't about how someone looks or where they come from. It's about kindness, trust, and caring for each other. And sometimes, the scariest-sounding words can hide the most beautiful meanings.
By summer's end, the garden had bloomed more beautifully than ever — and so had a little girl's heart, all thanks to a scruffy zombie dog and the magical power of friendship.
