The Garden Zombie's Secret

Lily pushed open the creaky garden gate, her golden retriever Barnaby bounding ahead. The old garden behind Grandma's house had always seemed magical, but today something felt different.

"Barnaby! Come back!" Lily called as her dog disappeared behind a towering hedge of sunflowers.

She pushed through the leaves and gasped. There, sitting on an old tree stump, was a tiny green creature with stitching across its forehead and one slightly loose button eye. It looked like a zombie doll from a storybook, but this zombie was wearing a bright yellow apron and carefully watering a patch of vibrant green plants.

"Hello there," said the zombie, his voice kind and crinkly like autumn leaves. "I'm Zed. And you must be Lily."

Lily stepped closer, amazed. "How did you know my name?"

"Zombies know many things," Zed winked, his button eye twinkling. "Especially garden zombies. We've been protecting special plants for hundreds of years."

Barnaby nudged Zed's hand, and the zombie patted the dog's head gently. This wasn't a scary zombie at all!

"What are you growing?" Lily asked, looking at the vibrant green leaves.

"Spinach," Zed said proudly. "Magic spinach. One leaf gives you the strength to lift ten times your weight. Two leaves make you understand what animals are saying. Three leaves... well, that's a secret."

Lily's eyes widened. "Really?"

Zed nodded. "Would you like to try some? But first, you must promise to use it only for helping others. That's the rule of garden magic."

"I promise!" Lily said solemnly.

She ate one leaf and suddenly felt light as a feather. She lifted Barnaby like he weighed nothing more than a feather. The dog barked with delight. With the second leaf, she heard Barnaby's thoughts: *This is amazing! Can we do this every day?*

Lily and Zed spent the afternoon as friends, tending the magical garden together. As the sun began to set, Zed handed her a small packet of spinach seeds.

"Plant these anywhere," Zed whispered. "The magic will grow wherever kindness lives. And remember, Lily - the scariest things sometimes turn out to be the best friends."

Lily hugged her new friend goodbye, Barnaby licking Zed's cheek. Walking home with the seeds in her pocket, Lily knew that magic was real, and sometimes it came in the most unexpected packages - even ones with green skin and button eyes.
