The Garden That Wouldn't Sleep

Lily loved her garden more than anything in the world. Every morning, she would skip outside with her trusty golden dog, Sunny, trailing behind her. Sunny's tail would wag so hard that his whole body wiggled like a happy pudding.

One day, Lily noticed something strange. The marigolds she had planted last week had withered completely. They looked brown and crinkly, like fallen leaves in autumn. Lily's eyes filled with tears.

"Don't be sad, Lily," said her grandmother, pressing a small orange bottle into her hand. "These are special vitamins for plants. My grandmother gave them to me when I was your age. They say magic vitamins can wake up anything that's sleeping."

Lily sprinkled the glittery orange powder over the withered marigolds and whispered, "Please wake up."

That night, Lily heard giggling coming from the garden. She grabbed her flashlight and Sunny followed, his paws making soft thumps on the grass. When they reached the marigolds, Lily gasped.

The flowers were standing straight and tall, dancing in the moonlight! But that wasn't the strangest part. The old toy zombie she had buried weeks ago—because it was too scary to keep in her room—was standing nearby, looking confused but friendly.

"Thank you for the vitamins," said the zombie, whose name turned out to be Zippy. "I was having a lovely nap underground until you woke me up."

Zippy wasn't scary at all. He was green and fuzzy, with a smile that stretched from ear to ear. Sunny licked Zippy's face, making him laugh a deep, rumbling laugh.

"Will you be my friend?" Lily asked.

"Forever and ever," Zippy promised. "But I must go back underground when the sun comes up. Zombies need their beauty sleep, you know."

Every night after that, Lily would sprinkle a pinch of magic vitamins, and Zippy would pop up to play tag, tell stories, and have tea parties under the stars. Sunny would guard them, barking happily at the moon.

Lily learned that sometimes, things that seem scary are just waiting for someone to give them a chance. And with a little love and magic vitamins, even the most unexpected friendships can bloom.
