The Garden Spy Squad

Leo loved baseball more than anything. His favorite glove sat by his bedroom window, ready for action. But one Tuesday morning, something terrible happened — his lucky baseball disappeared!

"Don't worry," said Grandma. "I'll make you some spinach for breakfast. It'll help you think."

Leo wrinkled his nose. Spinach? But he ate it anyway, and something magical happened. As he chewed, he heard tiny voices outside.

"Psst! Over here! We saw everything!"

Leo peeked into the garden. The spinach patch was waving its leaves at him!

"We're the Garden Spy Squad," whispered the biggest spinach leaf. "And we know where your baseball went."

"You can talk?" Leo gasped.

"Only to special kids who eat their spinach," the spinach giggled. "Now listen carefully. We've been spying on the squirrels all morning. One of them — named Nutty — took your shiny ball! He thinks it's a giant nut!"

Leo's eyes widened. "Where is he now?"

"In the old oak tree," said another spinach leaf. "But hurry! He's planning to bury it for winter!"

Leo grabbed his glove and raced to the big oak tree in his backyard. Sure enough, Nutty the squirrel was there, rolling the precious baseball toward a hole in the ground.

"Wait!" Leo called gently. "That's not a nut! That's my best friend!"

Nutty's tail twitched. He looked at the ball, then at Leo's sad face. Slowly, the squirrel pushed the baseball back toward Leo.

"Thank you!" Leo said, and Nutty chattered happily before scurrying up the tree.

That afternoon, Leo hit the biggest home run of his life. But the best part? Every morning, he ate his spinach and visited his new friends — the Garden Spy Squad, who were always ready for their next mission.

Some kids thought spinach was just a vegetable. But Leo knew better. Spinach gave you something more important than strong muscles — it gave you friends who would always have your back, even when you needed a spy to save the day.
