The Garden Spy's Secret Pool

Lily loved her floppy blue hat more than anything. With the hat pulled low over her eyes, she became the greatest garden spy in the world. Every afternoon, she crept through the vegetables, watching for magic.

One Tuesday, Lily noticed something strange. Behind the tall **spinach** leaves, something shimmered. She pushed the green leaves aside carefully and gasped.

A tiny **pool**, no bigger than a dinner plate, glowed with soft blue light. The **water** bubbled and sparkled like liquid sapphires. Lily leaned closer, her hat nearly falling off.

"Hello there," said a tiny voice.

Lily jumped! A small green creature, no larger than her thumb, peeked out from behind a spinach stem. He had webbed feet and droopy ears.

"I'm Fin!" the creature said. "And you're the first human to find our secret pool in ninety-seven years!"

"You're a real magical creature!" Lily whispered. "I've been spying for magic my whole life, and I finally found it!"

Fin laughed. "You're not very good at being a spy. We've been watching you watch us for weeks!" He pointed to three more tiny creatures hiding in the spinach patch.

Lily felt her cheeks get warm. "Why didn't you show yourselves before?"

"We only reveal our pool to kind hearts," Fin explained. "The water here grants wishes. But only to those who love all living things—even spinach!"

Lily's eyes went wide. "You mean the spinach that my mom tries to make me eat?"

"Exactly!" Fin said. "The spinach patch protects our pool. When you tend the garden with love, you help keep our magic strong."

Lily thought about all the times she'd complained about watering and weeding. She'd never realized her kindness was magical.

"May I make a wish?" she asked.

Fin nodded. "But remember—the best wishes help others."

Lily thought carefully. "I wish that everyone could see the magic in ordinary things. Even in vegetables!"

The water bubbled and swirled. Golden sparkles floated up and danced around Lily's hat, then drifted away on the breeze, toward every house on the street.

"Done!" Fin said. "Your wish will help children everywhere discover wonder in unexpected places."

Lily waved goodbye to her new friends and ran home, already planning tomorrow's garden adventure. Some things were even better than being a spy—like being a friend to magic.
