The Garden Sprite's Midnight Wake
The moon hung bright over the quiet neighborhood as Lily peered through her bedroom window. Below, something moved slowly through the garden with stiff, jerky motions. Her heart raced. A zombie?
Whiskers, her fluffy orange cat, purred nervously beside her. Barnaby, her loyal golden retriever, gave a soft woof of greeting, tail wagging.
"We have to help," Lily whispered, grabbing her flashlight. Whatever was down there seemed lost and confused, not scary at all.
The three of them tiptoed downstairs and crept into the backyard. In the moonlight, they saw him—a small green figure with glowing silver eyes, stumbling among the sunflowers. His movements were slow and clumsy, like he was waking from a very long nap.
"Hello?" Lily called out softly.
The figure froze. Then, in a voice like wind chimes, he spoke: "I've been asleep for a hundred years. The garden magic planted me as a seed, and now I've finally bloomed."
He was a Garden Sprite, brought to life by the full moon!
"You're not a zombie!" Lily laughed. "You're magical!"
"I'm Sprout," the sprite said, stretching his leafy arms. "I was running through the dream world for so long, trying to find my way back to wakefulness."
Barnaby licked Sprout's face. Whiskers rubbed against his leg. And Lily smiled, knowing that sometimes the scariest things turn out to be the most wonderful surprises.
That night, under the watchful moon, four friends sat among the sunflowers—a girl, a cat, a dog, and a magical sprite who had finally found his way home.
"The best friends," Sprout said, "are the ones who aren't afraid to say hello to something strange."
