The Garden's Sleepy Guardian

Lily loved her grandmother's garden more than anything in the world. Every morning, she helped water the tomatoes and sing to the sunflowers. But her favorite spot was the patch of bright green spinach that grew near the old stone wall.

Grandmother had warned her about strange noises at night. "The garden zombie comes out when the moon is full," she whispered. "Shambling, slow, and hungry."

Lily was curious, not scared. One full moon, she peeked through her curtains. A figure moved through the garden—slow indeed, with drooping shoulders and tangled hair. It stopped at the spinach patch.

But it didn't eat the spinach. It knelt and touched the plants gently. With each touch, the spinach grew taller, greener, more alive.

The next morning, Lily found the spinach flourishing like never before. She left a bucket of fresh water and a basket of spinach leaves by the wall.

That night, she watched again. The figure appeared, sipped the water slowly, then tasted the spinach. As it ate, it began to change. The tangled hair smoothed into silver waves. The drooping shoulders straightened. The tattered clothes transformed into a flowing green gown.

"Thank you," the figure whispered. Her voice sounded like wind through leaves. "I am Zola, the garden's guardian. For many years, I've grown weak without fresh spinach and clean water from this earth."

Zola explained that people called her a zombie because she moved slowly and only appeared at night. But she was magical, not scary. Her magic made the garden thrive.

"Will you be my friend?" Lily asked.

Zola smiled, and flowers bloomed at her feet. "Forever."

Every full moon after that, Lily left water and spinach for Zola. And Zola made the garden the most beautiful in all the land.

Lily learned that sometimes, the things we fear are just friends we haven't met yet. And a little kindness can turn even the scariest stories into the most magical adventures.
