The Garden's Secret Friend

Lily loved her grandmother's garden more than anything in the world. Every morning, she would skip through the rows of bright flowers and tall vegetables, imagining they were whispering secrets to her. One hot summer afternoon, she noticed something strange near the old pump where she drew water for the plants.

A small creature was shuffling slowly between the rows of spinach, its movements slow and careful. Lily had heard stories about zombies in scary movies, but this creature didn't look scary at all. It had green skin that matched the spinach leaves, flowers growing from its hair like a living crown, and the kindest eyes Lily had ever seen.

"Are you a zombie?" Lily asked, standing tall and brave.

The creature shook its head slowly. "I'm Sprout," it said in a voice like rustling leaves. "I'm not a monster. I'm the garden's keeper. I walk slowly so I don't hurt any plants."

Sprout explained that magic spinach had grown in the garden for a hundred years, and he was born from its enchanted roots. Every night, he danced in the moonlight to help the vegetables grow strong and healthy. But he was lonely because everyone who saw him ran away, thinking he was scary.

"You're not scary," Lily said firmly. "You're wonderful. Want to be my friend?"

Sprout's green face lit up with a smile. "I've always wanted a friend."

Lily and Sprout spent the afternoon together. She showed him how to make dandelion crowns, and he taught her which flowers made the best fairy tea. When the garden grew thirsty, they carried water together in an old watering can, Sprout carefully stepping around each tender plant.

"Why do you love spinach so much?" Lily asked.

"It's not just food," Sprout whispered. "Magic spinach gives you courage when you're afraid, and strength when you feel weak. But it only works if you share it."

That evening, Lily's grandmother served spinach salad for dinner. Lily noticed something different—it sparkled slightly in the light, and when she took a bite, she felt brave and happy, like she could do anything. She sprinkled some onto her little brother's plate, and he smiled instead of making his usual yucky face.

From that day on, Lily visited Sprout every afternoon. They watered the garden, sang to the flowers, and shared stories about their adventures. And whenever Lily felt scared or worried, she would eat a leaf of magic spinach and remember her best friend.

Sometimes, the scariest-looking things turn out to be the most wonderful of all. You just have to be brave enough to say hello.
