The Garden's Secret Friend
Tommy loved two things more than anything: his golden retriever Sunny, and playing baseball. Every afternoon after school, they'd play catch in the backyard. Sunny would chase every ball, even the ones that sailed over the fence into Mr. Abernathy's mysterious garden.
One day, Tommy hit his best swing ever. The ball soared through the air and disappeared into the overgrown vines next door.
"Good boy, Sunny!" Tommy cheered, then froze. The ball was gone.
That evening, Tommy noticed something strange. A figure was moving slowly through Mr. Abernathy's garden. It shuffled and groaned, its arms reaching out like it was searching for something.
"It's a zombie!" Tommy gasped, hiding behind the curtains. But Sunny wagged her tail and whined, wanting to investigate.
The next morning, Tommy summoned his courage. With Sunny at his side, he peeked through the garden fence. There, tangled in morning glory vines and rose bushes, was old Mr. Abernathy, carefully untangling plants with his gnarled hands. He wasn't a zombie at all—just a lonely gardener who moved slowly because of his arthritis.
"Looking for this?" Mr. Abernathy called, holding up Tommy's baseball with a gentle smile. "Your dog's been barking at it all night."
Tommy's face turned red. "I... I thought..."
"You thought I was a monster?" Mr. Abernathy laughed. "I get that. This old garden can look pretty spooky at dusk." He handed the ball through the fence. "Want to see something magical?"
For the next hour, Tommy and Sunny learned that Mr. Abernathy had once been a professional baseball player. He taught Tommy how to pitch a curveball, while Sunny chased butterflies through the enchanted garden paths.
Sometimes, things that seem scary are just misunderstood. And sometimes, the best friends are found where you least expect them.
That summer, Tommy and Sunny visited Mr. Abernathy every day. The garden wasn't scary anymore—it was full of magic, baseball, and friendship.
