The Garden's Secret Friend

Lily loved visiting her grandmother's cottage in the woods. Every summer, she spent weeks exploring the magical forest, picking wildflowers, and helping in the garden.

One sunny morning, Lily noticed something strange. The **spinach** plants in Grandma's garden were growing taller than she'd ever seen! The leaves sparkled like emeralds in the sunlight.

"That's odd," Lily whispered. She decided to watch the garden that night.

As the moon rose high, Lily peeked through her window. Something was moving among the vegetables! It shuffled slowly, with arms stretched forward, making soft groaning sounds.

Lily's heart raced. Was it a... **zombie**? The village storytellers spoke of zombies, but they were supposed to be scary!

Summoning her courage, Lily crept outside with her flashlight. The creature froze in the **spinach** patch.

"Please don't be scared," it said in a raspy but gentle voice. "I'm not a real zombie. I'm Zola, the Garden Guardian!"

Zola wasn't scary at all. She had green skin like fresh leaves and flowers woven into her hair. She explained that villagers called her a zombie because she moved slowly and worked at night, but she was really a magical spirit who helped gardens grow.

Suddenly, a large shadow emerged from the forest. Lily gasped—a huge **bear**!

"Don't worry!" Zola said. "This is Barnaby."

The bear sat down and munched happily on some **spinach** leaves. Barnaby and Zola were best friends. Every night, Zola tended the garden while Barnaby kept her company and protected her.

"Why does everyone think you're scary?" Lily asked.

Zola smiled sadly. "Because I look different. But appearances don't show what's in someone's heart."

Lily thought about this. She had been scared too, at first. But now she saw how kind Zola and Barnaby were.

"Will you teach me about gardening?" Lily asked.

Every night that summer, Lily learned from Zola and Barnaby. She discovered that the most magical things in life often come from unexpected friendships.

When summer ended, Lily promised to keep their secret. She learned an important lesson: never judge someone by what others say. True friends can be found in the most surprising places—even in a garden at midnight, between a gentle zombie and a spinach-loving bear.
