The Garden's Gentle Guardian

Lily discovered the secret gate on a Tuesday, hidden behind a wall of ivy in her grandmother's backyard. She pushed through the leaves and gasped.

The garden beyond was magical. Flowers hummed soft lullabies. Butterflies left trails of glitter in the air. But something seemed wrong. The once-vibrant plants drooped sadly.

"Hello?" Lily called out.

A figure shuffled from behind a pumpkin patch. It looked like a zombie—patchy skin made of moss, leaves for hair, twigs for fingers. Lily almost ran, but the creature's eyes were kind and golden.

"Don't be afraid," it rasped. "I'm the Garden Guardian. I've been sick for so long."

Lily stepped closer. "What's wrong?"

"I need magic foods to restore my strength," the Guardian explained. "The garden's magic comes from healthy things growing here. Without my energy, everything fades."

Lily's grandmother had taught her about vitamins and healthy eating. "I can help!"

She found a perfect orange papaya, glowing with morning sunshine. Nearby grew emerald spinach leaves, shimmering with dew. And hanging from a tiny tree was the brightest orange she'd ever seen.

"The papaya has vitamins to heal your mossy skin," Lily said, handing it over. The Guardian ate it, and some green patches freshened instantly.

"The spinach will make your twig fingers strong." He crunched the leaves, and his fingers straightened.

"And this orange"—Lily placed it in his palm—"will fill you with sunshine magic."

The Guardian ate the orange and burst into warm light. When the glow faded, he stood tall—no longer shuffling, but glowing with health. The garden around them perked up instantly. Flowers sang louder. Butterflies danced.

"Thank you, Lily," the Guardian smiled. "You didn't run away when I looked scary. You saw with your heart."

"My grandmother says that's the best way to see anything," Lily beamed.

"Come back anytime," said the Guardian. "This garden belongs to friends."

Lily skipped home, her pocket full of magical seeds. Some things that look scary at first, she learned, are just magic waiting for the right friend to set it free.
