The Garden's Gentle Friend

zombiedoghair

Lily had the most extraordinary hair. It was brown and curly and wild, always tangling into interesting shapes no matter how much she brushed it. Her grandmother called it magical hair, because it seemed to have a mind of its own.

One sunny afternoon, Lily and her dog Barnaby were exploring behind their house. Barnaby was a scruffy terrier mix with floppy ears and a nose that could find adventure anywhere. Together, they followed a butterfly into the forbidden garden—the old overgrown patch behind the fence that everyone said was haunted.

That's when Lily saw him. A strange figure shuffling between the rose bushes. He moved slowly, with stiff jerky motions. His clothes were old and ragged, covered in moss.

A zombie! Lily's heart raced.

Barnaby, being the brave dog he was, trotted right up to the figure. The zombie knelt down slowly and patted Barnaby's head with gentle fingers. Barnaby wagged his tail happily.

Lily crept closer. The zombie turned, and Lily gasped. His face was kind, not scary at all. His skin was weathered like old tree bark, and in his hands he held something beautiful—a wilting rose that he was carefully tending back to life.

I am not a zombie, the old man whispered. I am the garden's keeper. These plants have been sleeping for so long. I wake them up again.

He touched another flower, and it bloomed right before Lily's eyes. Her hair, usually so wild with static, suddenly felt calm and peaceful.

People are scared of what they don't understand, the garden keeper said. Sometimes the strangest things are the most wonderful.

Lily nodded. She had thought he was a monster, but he was really a magician of flowers. He wasn't bringing dead things to life—he was helping sleepy things wake up and grow.

Every day after school, Lily and Barnaby visited the garden. The keeper taught Lily how to nurture plants, and she taught him about the outside world. Her wild hair became like the garden—beautiful in its own unique way.

Lily learned that judging by appearances can make you miss the most amazing friendships. And sometimes, the things that seem scary at first are actually the most magical of all.
